Worked for a while then died a quiet death..... May 16, 2010 Jules! (NC, United States) This fax machine was a very light duty machine. I received less than 100 sheets of paper and sent less than 100. I used it to copy a page or three in the time I owned it, which was about 3 years. One day I wanted to fax something and the machine was dead. No moaning or groaning, thank goodness...but dead nonetheless. The phone didn't even work anymore...I did try to hook it up to another outlet in the house just to see if that was the problem. It wasn't.
Became a paper jammer November 14, 2009 Adam Helberg (Tustin, CA United States) It worked fine for about a year, then started having problems with feeding paper and jamming. It's about two years old now and is ready for the dumpster. This is the second HP product I've had that has been plagued with paper jamming.
I recommend avoiding this machine. I'll try a Canon next as I've had good luck with their printers.
Horrible excuse for a fax November 3, 2009 Never buy HP (California) I have had an HP 1040 for a little longer than the warranty period and I am throwing it in the trash (actually taking it to the electronic recycle).
It's fax operation mode requires that you let it scan all pages before it dials. If the fax doesn't go through, you have to start all over again.
Even worse, it tends to grab more than one page at a time, causing it to jam and then you have to start all over again.
I have contacted HP's laughable customer support and someone from the opposite side of the globe simply reads their scripts off of a computer screen and essentially tells you there is nothing wrong.
I revise my first statement. As soon as I get a replacement for this piece of ****, I am going to take a sledge hammer to it before I take what's left to recycling.
Fax machince for small college campus September 17, 2009 J. Reis (Grand Junction, CO) This fax works well for our needs. We communicate with many other campuses around the state and often need to share information quickly. The clarity is good, which is very beneficial with the information we are sending or receiving. It is helpful the machine is compact and easy to use as our counter space is limited.
Great for Occasional Use August 30, 2009 Debbie I send and receive approximately 10-15 sheets per month. This isn't heavy use, but the documents that I send and receive are critical. That said, I've had the 1040 for more than 2 years, and it has never failed me yet. There have been perhaps 3 occasions on which I've received long documents, and those have come through fine, also. I have found this machine to be extremely reliable and have no complaints. I would recommend it in an instant to somebody whose needs are low volume of highly critical material.
