Curling pages and will not pick up paper February 24, 2010 Jennifer Mathews (San Jose, CA United States) I absolutely hate this printer. I set it up and it worked fine. I have had it for 6 months. About once every 2 or 3 weeks this machine suddenly reads "No Paper" though there is paper in it and it is not jammed. There is a plastic clicking sound about 6 times in a row then the red light. If I power it down, then back up, stick my hand in the tray and scream curse words it might start working eventually. So far the shaking the printer, turning it off, sticking my hand in the tray and clicking things around while screaming expletives has worked, but yesterday it stopped working and none of this seems to help.
Not enough of a problem for you? It curls the pages as I print them so that any document more than 4 pages long gets jammed if you do not pull the pages out and babysit it.
Grossly overpriced for such a crappy mess. I'm uninstalling this and putting my HP printer back. BROTHER SUCKS!
Great printer/scanner for a small office November 30, 2009 Carlos Alvarez (Chandler, AZ United States) We use this in our home office. It replaced a print-only device so both of us could scan documents (we scan everything and discard the paper). The network scanning feature is excellent, allowing anyone in the office to scan over the network. Print quality is good, no jam issues. Others mentioned issues with envelopes, but I've never had a single problem. This is a very quiet machine, and unlike many other laser printers, doesn't stink up the room.
Good machine, with a few specific kinks. March 26, 2009 Administrative Girl (Piedmont Triad, NC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Our office uses this printer/scanner for office work. As a small office, it works well for us. PROS: The printer and scanner work very fast. The machine is quiet and the print quality is clean and clear. The fax quality is as good as any, on the receiving end. Don't know how it is for faxes we send. CONS: The printer was not terribly expensive, but the replacement drum is $200, which is a hefty amount. We use this printer to print addresses and stamps on legal envelopes. It is a front feed but, instead of shooting the envelopes out the back of the printer, they coil back over and come back out the front. We have had trouble with this wrinkling the envelopes. The manual tells how to change a setting on the feed to avoid this problem, but this involves turning the printer all the way around and flipping two small levers. The machine is bulky enough that it isn't worth the trouble. We've resorted to printing our envelopes on another machine. Another issue is the scan quality, which is not very clear. Overall, it is a good, high quality machine with a few kinks.
great machine March 26, 2009 D. Brookerd (Mobile, Alabama United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have a home based company where I print & scan mostly. I purchased this machine after going thru 3....yes 3 HP multi function units and have never been happier. I dont print with evelopes so I dont know how that works but I have had this machine since March of 2006 and have had no problems until now. I had an error code to replace the paper feeder tray which I did at $[...]....no big deal. Then shortly after that I get a new error code that says replace fuser. Well the fuser is expensive...about $[...] bucks! So it is in my best interest to just get a new machine. I will buy another one just like this one and keep it in it's box until mine quits. I print and scan probablly at least 1000 pages per day so this unit has really stood up to my abuse. I must say I wish the toner was cheaper. I usually buy the high yeild toner which runs me about $[...] per month. Great machine for the money and I would recommend it. Oh, one more thing, I occasionally use it to scan color photos and the scanner works great for that. The pics look great. Probably not what you would use if you scanned pics for a living but for the occasional email or online post, it's great.
Not as good as some other Brother printers February 12, 2009 Amanda Jane (USA) I bought this when my trusty Brother MFC-9700 died. It had been a great printer, so I wanted to replace it. However, because it was urgent to replace it, I went to an office supply store and bought what they had - this model.
It appears very similar to the MFC-9700, but in practice, there are some problems.
1. It creases envelopes.
2. The paper tray doesn't hold very much. I'm constantly having to refill it.
3. The toner leaks like crazy. I've cleaned it many times but it still spills toner onto my documents.
I run a small business and have another printer which I use for final documents. I use the MFC-8460N for regular printing, some letters, and drafts, and as my fax machine. So these problems are not crippling, but they are irritating. Definately not the quality of the MFC-9700.
On the plus side, this model hardly ever jams.

UPDATE: I'm updating after six months. The machine now jams frequently. I can't load more than about 20 sheets of paper at a time. I plan to take this model home and replace it with a higher quality, non-brother printer. Disappointing, because my previous experience with Brother was much better.
